In response to a large attack on his platoon, Private First Class Thompson positioned his machine gun in the path of advancing Korean soldiers, which allowed his platoon to withdraw. Private First Class Thompson remained in his position until he was mortally wounded. For his valor, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
