Private First Class Kaho'ohanohano was in charge of a machine gun squad when his position was attacked by an overwhelming enemy force. He directed his men to a safer defensive position but remained behind to provide supporting fire. Although wounded in the shoulder, he continued to provide deadly covering fire until his ammunition ran out, then fought hand to hand until killed. His courage and example inspired a counterattack which repulsed the enemy. Upon finding Private First Class Kaho'ohanohano's emplacement, friendly forces found 11 enemy soldiers killed outside of the emplacement and two inside. His actions resulted in his being awarded the Medal of Honor.
